Service Done With Love

Dear friends,

The topic I want to share with you is service for Lord Krishna. Service is the most important responsibility in the world, because having responsibility for the spiritual life of another soul is the most valuable thing there is.
This leads us to the most important question in life: What is the most valuable thing in the world?

If you ask someone: What is the most valuable for you in the world? You will learn what kind of person he is, and if you want to know where he stands, ask him what are his most important desires in life. We should all have desires, and we should have priorities, and based on those priorities, one really has to live. If you don’t have a spiritual master, then you don’t know where to work and you are virtually dependent of your own whims. One of the most common things you hear in this world is: I not to know what to do with my life, I don’t know how to handle my relationships, I don’t know what to do to get money, I don’t know what to do to get a date, I don’t know what to do to have fun, I don’t know what to do with all the problems I have, I don’t know what to do to avoid work.

When you don’t know what to do, that means you haven’t accepted that you need to do something, because when you accept your dharma you know what to do, and when you accept a spiritual master, a beautiful problem arises regarding when to do everything that you have to do. You will never see a person engaged in the loving devotional service being lazy or confused, or even worse being sad or bored. Well, maybe sad, because he can’t do the service as he wished he could, meanwhile selfish people are sad because they have to do things they don’t like.

We can see today that education has been completely perverted. The much admired celebrity life promotes a life of doing nothing positive. They consider that work is for the lower classes, called working class or proletarian. But in reality, if you read the Bhagavad Gita, work is very elevated as long as it is done with devotion. Lord Krishna says that work should be dedicated to God. If someone has some sense of duty and fulfills their job, that already is a very special person, but one of our main duties as human being, is to accept a spiritual master.

The most elevated service is the one performed with spiritual attachment and not only with of a sense of duty, but because you feel attachment for your guru, for the devotees, for service and hopefully, attachment for Lord Krishna himself. When you are very attached to the service in the area that your spiritual master has blessed you with, you want to renounce to all the amenities, the fever for fame and material gratification begin to decline, then you can say that something spontaneous is emerging within you, something higher than the service or the work done with attachment, which is service done with love.

That kind of attitude totally conquers Lord Krishna. When you work so hard that you are being captivated by the desire to render loving service, that is called Bhakti Yoga, and that is what we study when we hear about the Gopis of Vrindavan and that is what we see in the lives of our spiritual masters, who live for Krishna and others, not for themselves. I hope that these words encourage you to work. Lord Krishna reminds us that we shouldn’t be attached to the fruits of our work, they belong to Him, and they belong to Him to ensure our spiritual advancement.

I want to express my appreciation in advance to all of you who want to guard purity and to those who haven’t confused spiritual achievements with material achievements.

With affection,
Swami B.A. Paramadvaiti
